Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common problem encountered in both primary and secondary care and contributes to a substantial workload for medical practitioners in district general hospitals, teaching hospitals (about 10% of hospital admission) and the community. Even though smoking has fallen from a peak of about 70 per cent in the 1950s to about 20 per cent now, COPD is still common because there's a lag period between the onset of smoking and the onset of symptoms of COPD.
